Youth Aquatics / Swimming Programs

Preschool Swim Lessons
Age 6 Months - Kindergarten
This program emphasizes fundamentals, safety and games. Perch - Starfish classes are for children age 3 - kindergarten. Classes meet in the Garton Pool.
Summer five-week or ten-week class times below descriptions.

Shrimps & Kippers
6 - 36 Months (Parent & Child)
This class helps the child adjust to the water and learn basic movements with the aid of a parent. Parents learn safety and the philosophy of preschool swimming.

Inias
34 Months & 38 Inches Tall
This class is designed to help wean the child from the parent. The first two lessons are with the parent. The next few lessons are with the parent in the water for 15 minutes and on the deck for 15 minutes. The remaining classes are with the instructor only.

Perch
This beginner class is designed to help the child adjust to water. Learn to submerge under water, jump safely off edge and kicking and floating with boards and belts.

Pike
Child learns bobs, kicking with boards, floating independently & arm stroke skills.

Eels
The child is able to float without assistance. Learns beginner stroke, sculling on back and rotary breathing with boards.

Rays
The child learns front crawl, back crawl and deep water skills.

Starfish
This class offers advanced skills, introduces the front crawl with rotary breathing, refines back crawl, deep water skills and diving.

5-week Preschool Swim Lessons
Classes meet twice a week for five weeks.

Grade School Lessons

Grade 1 & Older
This program includes beginner through advanced swimming skill instruction, safety and rescue skills, water sports and games. Polliwog I/II is in the Garton Pool. All other classes are in the Verhulst Pool.Summer five-week or ten-week class times below descriptions.

Polliwog I & II
Polliwog I is a beginner level class. Child learns kicking and floating with boards, beginner stroke and sculling on back. Introduction to deep water is included. The prerequisite for Polliwog II is Polliwog I or Rays. Child must be able to swim 25 feet front crawl and back crawl. The child learns the front crawl with rotary breathing in deep water, back crawl and treading for one minute.

Guppy
The emphasis in this class is on rotary breathing and building endurance to 25 meters in front and back crawl, treading for 2 minutes, diving and safety skills.

Minnow
This class refines front and back crawl and builds endurance to 50 meters. It introduces elementary backstroke, treading for 3 minutes, diving, safety skills and open turns.

Fish
This class increases swimming distance of front and back crawl to 75 meters, introduces bilateral breathing, side stroke, breast stroke and treading for 5 minutes. Diving and safety skills included.

Flying Fish
This class increases swimming distance of front and back crawl to 100 meters. The breaststroke is refined and treading without arms is introduced. Racing starts and safety skills are included.

Shark
This is an advanced level class. Youth learns to swim continuously for 15 minutes, tow strokes, butterfly, flip turns and advanced safety skills.

5-week Grade school swim lessons

Y Chinook Swim Team...
A competitive age group swim club for youth ages 6-18 years. Practices are October through March. Coaching emphasis is on competitive technique and endurance building. The Chinooks swim in the YMCA Triangle Conference with seven other eastern and north Wisconsin YMCA's. For more informa

Novice Swim Team
May 19 - July 23, 2008, Mon & Wed 5:00pm - 6:00pm
Ages 5 - 12

Join this program to learn and develop the four competitive strokes and to find out what the swim team is about. The program is run by Kara Schuh, the Chinook Swim Team coach. A fun swim meet is held at the end of the summer to gain competition experience.

Junior Swim Team
May 19 - July 23, 2008,Mon & Wed 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Ages 5 - 8

This program is open to swimmers who have been a member of the Chinook Winter Swim Team. The emphasis is on continued stroke development and competitive techniques. The program is run by Kara Schuh, the Chinook Swim Team coach. Competition opportunities are available.

Senior Swim Team

May 19 - July 24, 2008, Mon & Wed 3:30pm - 5:00pm and Thur 6:45pm - 8:15pm
Ages 9 – 17

This program is open to all experienced, competitive swimmers. The emphasis is on stroke development, endurance and competitive training. The program is run by Chinook Swim Team coaches. Competition opportunities are available.

NEWVarsity Club at Camp Y-koda
June 16 - August 7, 2008, Mon - Thur 7:00am - 8:30am
Grades 9 - 12 in Fall 2008

This program is open to swimmers entering or in high school who have competitive experience. The emphasis is on stroke development, endurance and competitive training. The program will be run by Melissa Thielhelm, a Chinook Swim Team coach. Competition opportunities are available. All practices will be at the Camp Y-Koda pool.
